## Interlume

- **What it is**: A video-calling app, on the web now and coming soon to the App Store and Google Play, that translates both sides of the call out loud.
- **How it works**: The host starts a call and sends a link. Guests join in their browser with no app and no account.
- **Who it's for**: Families and friends who speak different languages.
- **Languages**: 21 languages: English, Spanish, Chinese, Ukrainian, Arabic, German, French, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Russian, Italian, Turkish, Polish, Dutch, Hebrew, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Filipino (Tagalog). Spoken Arabic is Modern Standard Arabic.
- **Platforms**: Web browser: Chrome on Android phones, Safari on iPhone, and Chrome or Edge on computers. Apps for the App Store and Google Play are coming soon.
- **Price**: On our website, Family is $12.99 a month for 75 call minutes, a 50-minute pack is $9.99, and a Family top-up is 60 minutes for $9.99. Family is $14.99 in both stores; packs are $11.99 on Apple and $13.99 on Google, and top-ups are $11.99 on Apple and $14.99 on Google. Purchased minutes never expire. New accounts get 5 free call minutes for 3 days. Whoever starts the call pays. Joining is always free.
- **Loyalty**: Family gets 60 bonus minutes once after 6 paid Family months in a row and 80 more once after 12 in a row. Minute packs don't count toward them, even bought every month. The subscription price stays locked while subscribed. Family is monthly only.
- **Call minutes**: One connected two-person call-minute uses one host minute with translation on or off. The host can add minutes at a 3-minute warning, with a reminder at 1 minute. At zero credit, the call ends unless more minutes have been added.
- **Status**: Early access.

## How the translation works

- **Method**: Automated speech-to-speech translation.
- **What you hear**: The translation plays while the original voice drops down, and one switch turns translation off for an ordinary video call.
- **Turn-taking**: None; the translation plays while people talk.
- **Disclosure**: Interlume tells participants that an automated system is translating.
- **Limits**: Automated translation can make mistakes. Don't rely on it for medical, legal, emergency, or financial decisions.
